After over 17
years as a practicing designer in Canada's major theaters,
Robert Doyle decided that the area of teaching theatrical
costume skills had not been fully explored and took
the opportunity when it was presented at Dalhousie University
in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada in 1974 to create the
first such full time program of study.
The success
of this program has been extraordinary, seeing graduates
filling positions in all of Canada's major theatres,
television and film companies as well as many young
fashion designers now working under their own "labels".
Due to the strong focus on history within the program,
we entered a new field, that of museum costumes restoration
and reproduction. Several of Dalhousie University's
graduates have entered this new area of expression.
After many years
of teaching, Robert Doyle felt the need to expand his
horizons and to share his experience and skills with
a wider audience - and formed the SARTORIAL PRESS publishing
house.
